NSW is in a housing crisis with housing affordability at an unprecedented low and mortgage payments and rent representing the largest expense for most households.
After 12 years of the former Liberal Government, NSW remained the only state in Australia that didn't have proper protections for renters.
That is why my Government passed the most significant rental reforms in over a decade earlier this year.
Our reforms follow through on our election commitment to improve rental laws and achieve the right balance between owners and renters.
We believe you should not have to pay additional fees every time the mortgage comes out, and you should not have to pay, to pay your rent.
That is why to reduce the burden on renters, we have banned fees for background checks when applying for a rental property, as well as ensuring there is a free way to pay your rent.
Additionally, we have limited rent increases to only once per year and you will also be able to check whether the rent you are being asked to pay in the area is fair, through the new, free website, Rent Check.
Under previous legislation, 32,000 renters had been evicted from their home for no reason at all.
That is why we have banned no grounds evictions by establishing a set of reasonable grounds to end a tenancy, giving greater certainty to renters.
This means that renters no longer have to live with the fear that they may be kicked out of their home.
We have also developed the nation's first Portable Rental Bond Scheme, which will allow eligible renters to digitally transfer their existing bond with them when moving homes.
As Premier of NSW, it is my number one priority to help people with the pressure of cost-of-living.
And these new measures will make a difference, because we want to build a fairer rental market for both tenants and owners.
