The New M12 opening toll free

By The Hon. Chris Minns MP

18 March 2026

My Government has cut the ribbon on the new M12 motorway, opening toll free.

Over 5,000 local workers delivered this vital road, on time and on budget. You can drive on it this week and it wont cost you a dollar.

The 16-kilometre road connects Elizabeth Drive in the east to The Northern Road in the west, delivering an intersection free, 100km/h run straight to the airport precinct.

After a decade of privatisation of our road network by the previous Liberal National Government, I am proud to be opening new roads, toll free.

Under the previous Government, Sydney's busiest motorways were handed over to private operators, leaving drivers with the bill.

Locally, the Liberals put a toll on the M5 East, locking us into contracts until 2060, slugging drivers with a new toll on a road they used to drive on for free and pushing thousands of cars and trucks on to our local road network.

When we came to Government, we committed to ending the tollmania and working to undo the damage of twelve years of privatisations from the former Liberal Government.

Bringing fairness back into our toll network takes time and we are continuing to work with toll providers to get the best deal for drivers, but we know we needed to take immediate action.

It's why we introduced the $60 a week toll cap to provide immediate relief to those who are paying the most.

Right here in Kogarah, over $1,700,000 has been saved across the electorate.

Across NSW, we have returned $211 million directly to commuters to put more money back in your pocket.

I encourage any drivers looking to claim their rebate to visit www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/claim-the-toll-relief-cap for more information.

We're still in negotiations with private providers to reform our toll road system to get a better deal for drivers.

In the meantime, we will continue delivering real, practical, cost- of-living relief to commuters while building the essential infrastructure our state needs.
