Tackling Rent Bidding

There are two million renters in New South Wales. Far too often, they've been forgotten in our political discussions.

And with low vacancy rates, and rising prices, it's been a particularly anxious time for renters and their families.

The NSW Labor Government is giving our renters more security, so they can feel comfortable in their homes, and so they can build a life in this great city.

In October 2024, we introduced a historic package to make the rental market fairer and less stressful, including by ending no grounds eviction in NSW.

Under previous legislation, renters could be evicted for no reason at all.

Of course, there will still be reasonable grounds to end a tenancy - if the house is damaged, or the property is being renovated, or the owners are moving back in - or if they're just not paying.

But it just can't just be to put up the rent.

We have also banned fees for background checks when applying for a rental property, as well as ensuring there is a free way to pay your rent.

Additionally, we have limited rent increases to only once per year and you will also be able to check whether the rent you are being asked to pay in the area is fair, through the new, free website, Rent Check.

The good news is, we've seen some encouraging evidence that suggests our changes are working.

The latest data from our Rental Taskforce, for instances, show that our reforms have practically wiped out the practice of solicited rent bidding.

This means future tenants will no longer be pressured to offer more than the advertised rent.

As Premier of NSW, it is my number one priority to ease the pressure of cost-of- living.

That includes taking some pressure off renters, by making the system fairer and more secure.
