Putting Safety at the Heart of Road Rules

By The Hon. Chris Minns MP

29 June 2023

As the newly elected Premier of NSW, my Government is working hard to put safety back at the centre of our road rules.

For years drivers in this state had been hit with low range speeding offences after the previous Government decided to remove speed camera warning signs.

As a result, we saw record fines but no decrease in the overall road toll.

That is why at the March state election, I made a promise to put safety at the heart of our road rules.

This week, I started work on delivering this promise by fast tracking our proposed demerit point incentive scheme and will deliver it six months sooner than promised.

Under the 12-month trial, eligible motorists who have at least one demerit point on their record from 17 January but remain offence-free for 12 months to January 17, 2024, will have one demerit point removed from their driving record.

It normally takes three years for a demerit point to be removed.

This means that more than 1.7 million drivers will be eligible to have a demerit point removed from their licence record.

We need everyone to work together to create a safer driving environment and ultimately push road trauma to zero.

It is time we put safety back at the centre of our road rules, not revenue raising.

We have already banned hidden mobile speed cameras and are now incentivising and rewarding safe driving.

Finally, I want to send a message to the people of NSW that as your Premier, I am committed to reducing the road toll and rewarding safe driving across the state.

Your sincerely,

The Hon. Chris Minns MP
Premier of New South Wales
