Birthday Milestones
Norma Booth
Mr CHRIS MINNS (Kogarah—Premier) - Today, I would like to congratulate Norma Booth on her 100th birthday last week. Norma was born in 1923 on a soldier's settlement near Shepparton. During the Second World War, Norma answered the call and joined the Army. She became a cipher operator at the Land Headquarters, operating signals and deciphering coded messages. In 1944, she volunteered to go to New Guinea where she was promoted to staff sergeant and worked until the end of the war coding and decoding messages. It was in New Guinea where she met her husband, Lyall Booth, an Army Intelligence officer. They married in 1949 and moved to Beverly Hills in the 50's where she has lived ever since. Norma is an outstanding and loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. It was a privilege to celebrate with her and her family at Mortdale RSL last week. I wish Norma and her family good health, happiness and peace of mind for the future.
Eunice Amos
Mr CHRIS MINNS (Kogarah—Premier) - I would like to congratulate and extend my best wishes to Eunice Amos for a very happy 100th Birthday. Eunice was born in Carlton NSW on March 27th 1924. She lived there with her family until she married her husband, Stanley Amos. Together, the couple built a house in Camperdown where they had their first son, Thomas. A few years later, Mrs Amos and her husband moved and built a house in Beverley Hills where they had two more children. To this day, Eunice still lives in the same house in Beverley Hills where she enjoys excellent health with only a little support. In addition to her three children, Eunice's family has now grown to include six grandchildren as well as two great grandchildren. Sadly, Stanley died in 2015 at the age of 96. I wish Eunice the happiest of days on her 100th birthday as well as good health, happiness and peace of mind for the future for her and her family.
Celebrations
Kogarah Bay Progress Association
Mr CHRIS MINNS (Kogarah—Premier) - I would like to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements and activism of Kogarah Bay Progress Association over the past 100 years. The Kogarah Bay Progress Association is a voluntary, not-for-profit, organisation striving to improve the quality of life, environment, and amenities of the St George community. I was honoured to join the Association's president, Jeff Powys, the State Member for Rockdale, Steve Kamper and many others at the Chairman's Club Lounge at Kogarah Jubilee Oval to celebrate the association's achievements over the past 100 years. Some of their many achievements include, establishing the building fund for the construction of the Kogarah War Memorial Pool, the dredging and draining of the tip of Kogarah Bay, the eventual formation of the Beverly Park Golf Course and the building of the causeway, now Ramsgate Road. One-hundred years is not an easy achievement and to consider it's been done on the back of volunteers is something special. Congratulations Kogarah Bay Progress Association on 100 years of community service for which we are all extremely grateful.
Hurstville Private Hospital
Mr CHRIS MINNS (Kogarah—Premier) - I would like to congratulate Hurstville Private Hospital on becoming the first ever hospital in New South Wales to offer a new type of revolutionary technology to treat heart trouble. Heart conditions such as atrial fibrillation can lead to irregular heart beating and can cause breathlessness, palpitations, chest discomfort and tiredness. With more than 500,000 Australians suffering from a heart condition, this treatment provides new surgical options. The new technology is set to revolutionise the treatment of abnormal heart function and provide a sense of hope to patients and their families. Hurstville Private Hospital Cardiologist Dr Calvin Hsieh said, "it is an exciting milestone to be the first in NSW to offer this cutting-edge technology, which will provide our patients with less complications, reduce surgery time and ensure a faster recovery". Congratulations and thank you to Hurstville Private Hospital for its dedication and commitment to delivering better health outcomes for our community.
Allen Blythe
Mr CHRIS MINNS (Kogarah—Premier) - I would like to congratulate and extend my best wishes to Mr Allen Blythe who celebrated his 100th birthday on Wednesday the 20th of September. Allen grew up in Bexley and has lived in the area for his whole life. In 1931, Mr Blythe joined the army and signed up to fight overseas as a diesel mechanic. However, his expert mechanical skills and extensive knowledge of diesel engines kept him in Australia. While stationed in East Maitland, Allen met the love of his life, Madge. In October 1947, they married and welcomed their two children, Darryl and Kerrie. In his working life Allen drove buses for the family business. Remarkably, if a regular passenger was not at their normal bus stop, he would stop outside their home to check if they were okay. Beyond his working life, Allen loved all things automotive and was recently awarded a Sixty Year Badge for his membership of the Veteran Car Club. Allen is a wonderful and loving person, with five much loved grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. The story of Mr Blythe is truly inspiring and I wish him good health, happiness and peace of mind for the future.
Bruce and Carmel Martin
Mr CHRIS MINNS (Kogarah—Premier) - I would like to acknowledge and congratulate Mr and Mrs Martin, who celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on the 14th of March, 2023. Bruce and Carmel grew up in Forbes NSW and met, working at the local newspaper. In 1953, they married and not long after, moved away from the beloved country life and bought their first home in the suburb of Bexley North. Remarkably, 63 years later they still live in the same home, where they have welcomed their nine children. Bruce has worked tirelessly for over 50 years while Carmel was extremely busy looking after their nine children. As a couple, they witnessed the arrival of television in the 1960's, automatic washing machines, seatbelts and colour television in the 1970's.In 2001, they were fortunate enough to realise their 50-year-old dream by travelling to the United Kingdom and Europe. Carmel and Bruce are both wonderful and loving people, with nine children, 21 grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. The story of the Martin family is truly inspiring and I wish them good health, happiness and peace of mind for the future.
Kogarah Storehouse
Mr CHRIS MINNS (Kogarah—Premier) - I would like to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements and activism of the Kogarah Storehouse over the past 30 years. The Kogarah Storehouse is a voluntary, not‑for‑profit outreach program which has been providing support in many ways for thousands of people struggling to meet life's challenges. The Storehouse provides over 3,300 free food parcels a year, hosts free Wednesday community lunches and offers payment assistance for electricity, gas, water and other bills for people in need. The storehouse also offers case management services and support for victims of domestic violence. Kogarah Storehouse chairman Russell Foxe said, "it has been an absolute privilege to have helped the tens of thousands of people who have visited the centre over the past 30 years". I would like to give a special thanks to the more than 6,000 volunteers who give their precious time to help the Storehouse deliver its essential services to the St George community. Congratulations Kogarah Storehouse on 30 years of community service for which we are all extremely grateful.
Dennis and Josephine Cheng
Mr CHRIS MINNS (Kogarah—Premier) - I would like to acknowledge and congratulate Hurstville residents, Mr Dennis and Mrs Josephine Cheng, who together celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in March this year. Mr and Mrs Cheng grew up in Hong Kong and met in primary school, some 60 years ago. Not long after, they married at the age of 23 and 20 respectively, having two beautiful children along the way. In 1978, Mr Cheng migrated to Sydney and was joined by Mrs Cheng and their two children, Yvonne and Billy a year later. It was here in Australia, that they welcomed their third child, Kimberley Cheng. After settling in Rose Bay in 1981, the Cheng family moved to Dover Heights in 1982, Kogarah in 1983 then Panania in 1994, before settling in Hurstville in 2000 where they have lived ever since. Dennis and Josephine have two grandchildren, Claudia Au and Kurt Cheng. The personal journal of Mr and Mrs Cheng is truly inspiring and serve as a fine example of the modern Australian Story. Congratulations to Dennis and Josephine on this special milestone and I wish the Cheng family good health, happiness and peace of mind for the future.
Lunar New Year Festival 2024
Mr CHRIS MINNS (Kogarah—Premier) - I would like to commemorate the Lunar New Year Festival held by the Georges River Council celebrating the Year of the Dragon on Saturday, February 3, 2024. This marks the 21st year that the Lunar New Year has been celebrated in the Georges River area and the largest celebration yet, attracting an estimated 50,000 visitors. Crowds enjoyed the diverse food stalls and traditional dance performances that were showcased, with particular emphasis on the dragon dances, symbolising prosperity as we welcome in the Year of Dragon. This celebration holds special significance for Georges River Council, as the dragon serves as both the council's emblem and the beloved mascot, Georgie the Dragon and provides an opportunity for community engagement and cultural exchange within our electorate.
James and Margaret Rossiter
Mr CHRIS MINNS (Kogarah—Premier) - I would like to acknowledge and congratulate Mr James and Mrs Margaret Rossiter, who will be celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary in April this year. Mr and Mrs Rossiter grew in Campbelltown and met at the local tennis club. Not longer after they married at St Peters Church in Campbelltown and had four beautiful children. Throughout the years, James and Margaret have continuously given up their time and energy to help the local community. Volunteering at the local school, church, Lions Club and many other community organisations, the Rossiter's were well known amongst their community as people who were always willing to support those in need. In 1976, they moved to Kogarah and ran their own newsagency, before retiring in Caringbah. Last year, they moved into a nursing home where they are enjoying the quiet life with each other's company. James and Margaret have reached the special milestone of 70 years together and are surrounded by much love from their 4 children, 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. The personal journey of Mr and Mrs Rossiter is truly inspiring and I wish the family good health, happiness and peace of mind for the future.
Beverly Hills Girls High School
Mr CHRIS MINNS (Kogarah—Premier) - I would like to recognise and congratulate a group of Year 10 students at Beverly Hills Girls High School on their recent success at the National Museum of Australia's school video challenge. The National Museum invited school students to tell stories about some of Australia's most historically significant events. The Beverly Hills Girls High School team centred its video on the abolishment of the White Australia Policy. Sarah Ghunaim, a member of the team, explained that "as someone whose parents are both refugees, we are appreciative of the abolishment of this policy – we would not be here in Australia if it had not happened, it truly opened the doors to multiculturalism in this country." I want to individually congratulate each member of this wonderful team – Fatima Azahraa Al Moudden, Sarika Tihim, Hebak Abdullahi, Maheya Hasan, Sarah Ghunaim and their teacher Helen Papadimatos. It is truly inspiring to see such a young group of students promote multiculturalism and initiate important conversations about the history of Australia. I have no doubt that these girls will make a positive impact on our community in the future and wish them all the best for their future endeavours.
Bexley Chamber of Commerce
Mr CHRIS MINNS (Kogarah—Premier) - I would like to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements and activism of the Bexley Chamber of Commerce over the past 100 years. I thank President Jeff Tullock, MC Yasmina Kovacevic and the Chamber committee for inviting me as a guest of honour at their centenary celebrations. Turning 100 is a tremendous milestone and it's hard to do justice to the various achievements of the Chamber over the last century. One of the Chamber's most remarkable accomplishments was its advocacy work regarding the building of the M5 East which after opening in 2001 dramatically reduced local traffic congestion. Beyond this, the Chamber successfully lobbied for the public domain over the last 30 years, established a community bank in 2004 as well as hosting countless ad hoc events aimed at supporting cohesion amongst our community. Small businesses not only define a Town Centre but contribute significantly to our State's economy. At the centenary I met many old business owners who continued to trade, through good times and bad, some for over 40 years. I want to congratulate the Bexley Chamber for their selfless efforts in promoting the great suburb of Bexley as a viable business hub.
Rockdale Ilinden Football Club
Mr CHRIS MINNS (Kogarah—Premier) - I would like to acknowledge and congratulate Rockdale Ilinden for a wonderful 2023 season winning overall Club Champions and 2023 NPL Men's NSW runners up. The club are looking to go one better and I wish them the all the best for the 2024 season which is now underway. Rockdale Ilinden is run like a big family and everyone is welcomed. President of the club Dennis Loether and the many volunteers put in countless hours each week, to ensure the club and the players have everything they need to be a successful club. They also continue to make inroads in promoting the game for aspiring young girls, an area where they have enjoyed tremendous success. The Club continues to grow and is always looking to improve and develop its facilities to provide its members with the best possible chance at succeeding. The St George community and myself are very proud of Rockdale Ilinden and all of their wonderful achievements over the years. I want to thank Rockdale Ilinden for providing our local community with a friendly, warm and competitive place to play football for more than 50 years.
South Hurstville Kindergarten
Mr CHRIS MINNS (Kogarah—Premier) - I would like to congratulate and recognise St George's new Police Area Commander, Detective Superintendent Paul Dunstan. Mr Dunstan has been helping protect the people of New South Wales for over 30 years. Paul started his career patrolling the streets of Liverpool and Macquarie before moving to Surry Hills in 2000, where he began work in the detective's branch. Since his appointment to the St George Area Command in May 2024, Superintendent Dunstan has been working tirelessly to mitigate crime and promote safety amongst our local community. In his first opening statements as Commander, Mr Dunstan made it clear that addressing domestic violence is his number one priority. Having already met with multicultural and religious leaders, Mr Dunstan is working tirelessly to provide peace of mind to our community and address this issue. Beyond this, Superintendent Dunstan is also focused on reaching out and supporting newly established multicultural communities such as the Nepalese, Mongolian and Ukrainian communities. On behalf of the St George community, I want to congratulate Mr Dunstan on his much-deserved promotion and express my deepest appreciation for the work he and the St George Local Area Command do to keep us safe.
Kogarah Waratah Football Club
Mr CHRIS MINNS (Kogarah—Premier) - I would like to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of the Kogarah Waratah Football Club over the past 100 years. The Kogarah Waratah Football Club was established in 1922 and is St George's longest running football club. The Club has a proud history of serving our local community, having introduced thousands of boys and girls to football over its 100 years. Having nurtured many young players to a successful career in football, the Waratahs have been the perfect place to grow and nurture our community's love for the world game. As the Member for Kogarah, I have watched current and former players of the club from all generations grow, not only as athletes, but as individuals as they carry their values and integrity from the field through to the wider St George community. With over 300 currently registered players, the organisation continues to be a beloved sporting club, encouraging pure sportsmanship and a clear passion for football. On behalf of the St George community, I want to congratulate the Kogarah Waratah Football Club and thank them for giving our children a safe and enjoyable place to play football for over 100 years.
Dragon Boat Festival 2024
Mr CHRIS MINNS (Kogarah—Premier) - I would like to extend my best wishes to the Chinese community in NSW and share in their celebration of this year's Dragon Boat Festival. The Dragon Boat Festival held on the 10th of June is an annual commemoration of the life of Qu Yuan, an ancient Chinese poet and loyal politician. The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu, is one of the most important celebrations of the year for the Chinese community filled with timeless traditions and legends. I know that within our local community many Chinese constituents have come together to celebrate this special occasion over the past couple of weeks. I thank the Chinese Australian Services Society and in particular the Hua Kang Seniors Group for giving our local Chinese seniors an opportunity to celebrate this wonderful occasion. Community organisation, 3 Bridges, also shared in the festivities by delivering packages of rice dumplings, a traditional delicacy, to seniors' homes. I would like to thank both these organisations for helping promote the spirit of the Dragon Boat Festival throughout the Kogarah electorate. I want to wish everyone celebrating this occasion a lifetime of prosperity and happiness and hope you all have a joyful festival.
St George School
Mr CHRIS MINNS (Kogarah—Premier) - I would like to express my deepest appreciation and gratitude towards the St George School which held its open day in April this year. The St George School provides a friendly and inclusive learning experience for students with intellectual, physical and multiple disabilities from preschool to year 12. During its open day, the school held demonstrations of paintings, drumming and the school's eye gaze program. Students and their parents also visited the school's unique 'Immersion Room,' an interactive sound and light experience which enables the children to familiarize themselves with daily life experiences such as using public transport or visiting a shopping centre. It is because of the professionalism and hard work of schools like the St George School that these children thrive, can be active and deeply involved in our community. I want to thank the teachers at the St George School for the amazing work they do each and every day to give kids with a disability the best quality education possible.
Bexley Coptic Orthodox Church
Mr CHRIS MINNS (Kogarah—Premier) - It was an absolute honour and privilege to visit the St. Mary and St. Mina Coptic Orthodox Church in Bexley on the 22nd of March 2024. I was asked to speak at the Church's youth meeting about the invaluable role family and friends play in our lives and the importance of spiritual growth. The power of faith lies in its ability to guide us through life's ups and downs as we learn to cherish personal relationships over material achievements. The event coincided with the Lenten period, a time of significant spiritual reflection and commitment for the Coptic Youth. The Coptic Orthodox Church hosts a wide variety of multicultural services such as prayer meetings, social events, fellowships and community support programs. Events like these serve as a testament to the value of engaging with your local community and supporting its spiritual and social endeavours. I wish to thank and acknowledge the branch volunteers who have continuously sacrificed their time and money over the years. The St George Red Cross has a long history of serving our local community with countless initiatives and programs that continue to make a positive difference in people's lives. Red Cross volunteers are often the first to respond to a crisis or disaster. Every day, they keep humanity alive, providing comfort to people in desperate need. Our local community would not be able to survive in times of crisis without the efforts of selfless individuals and organisations such as the Red Cross. On behalf of the St George community, I want to extend my sincere appreciation to all Australian Red Cross volunteers for the outstanding support provided to our community over the past 110 years.
Greek Festival of Sydney 2024
Mr CHRIS MINNS (Kogarah—Premier) - I wish to thank the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW for organising and hosting this year's Greek Festival of Sydney. Thousands of people crowded into Bay St on Sunday the 26th of May to share in the celebration of Greek culture, cuisine and community spirit. The day included a program of dance, singing, food and craft stalls. The Greek Festival of Sydney is one of New South Wales' most famous and diverse events attracting artists from around the globe. The festival also brought together many non-Greek communities to celebrate local Greek culture. As a representative of our community, it is wonderful to see events that not only celebrate our rich cultural diversity but actively promote multiculturalism. The celebration aims to promote the Greek-Australian community in a way that invites interest from all members of the Australian community. As one of the most multicultural communities in the state I have no doubt that the festival will become an annual event and continue to expand. Mr CHRIS MINNS (Kogarah—Premier) - I wish to acknowledge and recognise the incredible work of one of Kogarah's most famous small businesses, Pellegrino Hairdressing. Opening in 1984, Sam and Mary have devoted their life to the salon, which has been Hurstville and the surrounding areas longest running hairdresser. Throughout the years, the business has seen and endured several changes to the local area. Famously, Sam's brave defiance to continue operating past 1 pm changed the history of trading hours forever. It resulted in a case that set the precedent to enable hairdressers and bakers to continue operating past this time. While this was a landmark case, the real legacy of Pellegrino Hairdressing will be the generations of families that have walked through the doors of 334 Forest Road, the stories that have been shared and the memories that have been made. I want to thank the Pellegrino family for their lifetime of service to our local community and I wish them good health, happiness and peace of mind for the future.

Subodh's contribution to cricket in our local area is truly immeasurable. His dedication to the game and the Kingsgrove Cricket Club was unsurpassed. Beyond cricket, Subodh was known as an expert in all things property. Over the years, he mentored many members of our community in their journey of owning their first home. The four young men worked through continual thunder and rain for almost four hours before the storm settled. I praise and applaud these young men as local heroes. Their courage and determination in such dangerous conditions is truly inspirational. Our local community is lucky to have such selfless people that put the needs of the community above their own.
