Delivering on our commitment to you, my Government is making it easier for our state’s 2.3 million renters with the following reforms now in effect:

  • No grounds evictions are now banned;

  • It is now easier to have pets in rentals; and

  • Renters no longer have to pay additional fees when they pay their rent.

12 years of neglect by the former Liberal National Government saw renters in NSW fall behind the protections given to renters across the rest of the country.

These new reforms build on laws passed in the NSW Parliament last year, which included:

  • A limit to only one rent increase per year; and

  • A ban on renters paying for background checks when applying for a property.

They add to key initiatives already announced including:

  • Establishing a $6.6 million Portable Bonds Scheme: allowing eligible renters can move homes and digitally transfer their existing bonds with them;

  • Establishing Rent Check: a new, free tool renters can use to help check whether the rent they’re being asked to pay is fair; and

  • A $8.4 million Rental Taskforce: with investigators, inspectors and support teams to help renters and act on serious breaches of rental laws.

The rental market is tough at the moment, and NSW renters deserve the same certainty and security afforded to renters in other states.

We know there is more to do, but this is a part of our plan to build a better community for all of us.

Fill out your details below so I can keep you up to date on what my Government is doing for renters in Kogarah and to address the Housing shortage in NSW.
