Mental health is an often underdiscussed area that we all grapple with at some point in our lives.
New South Wales accounts for the most male deaths by suicide in Australia. In 2023 alone, there were 934 deaths by suicide, with men accounting for 78 per cent of these tragedies.
There is no shying away from these horrendous statistics and the tragic stories behind them.
Too many lives have been lost and too many families have been broken because of the deep stigma attached to men’s mental health.
That is why I am working hard to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health, raise awareness of mental health and lower men’s suicide rates.
Last week my government held a Men’s Mental Health Forum which brought together mental health advocates, experts and those with past experiences of mental illness.
The forum facilitated discussions surrounding men’s mental health, suicide prevention and helped set out the direction of future suicide prevention initiatives.
Suicide is the leading cause of death among Australia men aged between 15 and 44.
However, despite these high levels of need, it can be especially difficult for men to ask for help when they need it.
It is so important that we continue to raise awareness and ensure that every man in NSW knows that help is available.
The State Labor Government is doing everything it can to ensure that men do not suffer in silence and feel comfortable talking about their struggles.
We have invested $30 million to build a better community mental health system. This includes funding for mental health support services and specialised mental health workers in our local hospitals.
My government will continue to do all it can to support people struggling with mental illness.
If you or anyone you know is in a life-threatening situation, please seek help immediately by calling 000.
Yours sincerely,
The Hon. Chris Minns MP
Premier of New South Wales
