The Minns Labor Government has announced that it will fix Kempt Field in Hurstville and reopen it to the local community.
In the last four years of the previous Liberal Government, the land at Kempt Field sunk and had contamination issues leading to its closure.
It was left to sit there fenced off, denying valuable open space to our local community.
The former Liberal Government refused to fix it, claiming it wasn’t even their responsibility.
When Labor won Government in March last year, I was determined to address these longstanding issues associated with the former landfill site and return the park to the community of St George.
Now, I am committing $11.8 million to remediate Kempt Field so it can be safely reopened to the public.
The park and adventure playground served as rare open green space in Hurstville for our families to enjoy.
I am delighted that we are addressing the longstanding issues of subsidence and buried waste at this site so it can be reopened to local residents.
Remediation work is expected to begin in the next couple of months and take 12 months to complete.
As Premier of NSW, I understand the need to preserve the natural environment. Our local parks and open green spaces provide us with an opportunity for outdoor recreation and social interaction.
That is why I also committed $13 million in last year’s budget to complete and maintain Wolli Creek Regional Park.
I am expanding this important area of natural parkland to create more open space for local families and future generations to enjoy.
As we continue to grow, the Minns Labor Government is committed to delivering the important green space our local communities need.
Yours sincerely,
The Hon. Chris Minns MP
Premier of New South Wales
