The Minns Labor Government is delivering on its election promise to make renting fairer by ending no fault evictions in NSW.
Our state is facing a housing affordability crisis with rents and mortgage repayments the largest single cost of living pressure facing the people of NSW.
For 12 years, the former Liberal Government did not act.
Without action now, we are at risk of being a city with no young people.
As Premier of NSW, I am working hard to address the housing crisis and to ensure our younger generation has a future in this state.
The State Labor Government has already announced historic reforms that will increase the supply of well-built, well-located and affordable homes.
Now, we are making changes to the law to better protect and support renters.
There are over two million renters in NSW.
Yet, as things stand, these renters can be evicted for no reason at all.
I have heard too many stories from renters who live in fear and uncertainty that they may be forced out of their home for no legitimate reason.
That is why we are ending no fault evictions.
Ending no fault evictions will give more security and certainty to renters. Importantly, it means that renters no longer have to live in fear that they may be kicked out of their home.
Of course there will still be reasonable grounds to end a tenancy, but not just to increase rental prices
The Minns Labor Government is also implementing a new portable bonds scheme.
This will take further pressure off renters by allowing their bond to be transferred directly to their new property when moving homes.
This is all part of my plan to address the housing crisis for renters and people wanting to enter the housing market.
I want to give the young families of NSW the chance to stay local, to stay within distance of their parents and grandparents, within the communities they have grown up in.
Yours sincerely,
The Hon. Chris Minns MP
