A Helping Hand for First Home Buyers

Before the State election, I listened to the people of Kogarah, who were struggling under the stress of purchasing their own home.

That is why, I am creating a simpler and fairer stamp duty concession scheme to make it easier for first home buyers to enter the housing market.

Under legislation passed this week, any property purchased under $800,000 will have absolutely no stamp duty and any property purchased up to $1 million will have a reduced rate.

Starting from 1 July 2023, this new legislation introduces a fairer and simpler system that will help 5 out of every 6 first home buyers achieve their dream of owning their own home.

I want to send a message to the young people of Kogarah that you have a future in NSW which includes owning your own home.

Under our simpler, fairer stamp duty concessions, first home buyers in Kogarah can save up to $31,000.

The previous Liberal Government left us with $187 billion debt and another $7 billion of unfunded programs. In their 12 years of Government they sold off more than $3 billion of social housing and failed to meet its own targets for building new homes.

All this means that addressing the overall housing crisis will not be easy, but we have to start somewhere.

These are just the first steps to addressing the housing crisis and I want to send a message to the people of Kogarah that as your State Member of Parliament, I am committed to doing everything possible to ensure you can afford your own home.

Yours sincerely,

The Hon. Chris Minns MP
Premier of New South Wales
